Astra LT AB together with its FTD LT Cluster EXPO Group partners UAB „Aksonas“ and UAB „Aumega“, known for its pioneering industrial solutions, has reached another milestone with the production of high-technology dryers for cruise ships, which will be deployed on vessels embarking on global journeys. These advanced dryers are not only a testament to the FTD LT Cluster’s EXPO Group innovative capabilities but are also integral to the evolving standards of waste management in maritime operations.
Onboard a cruise ship, waste management is a critical aspect of ensuring environmental sustainability. The dryers, designed by Astra LT AB, play a crucial role in handling solid waste efficiently. The process begins with waste, such as food scraps and general garbage, being collected and sent into the drying units. These dryers dehydrate the waste, significantly reducing its volume, making it easier to manage. Once dried, the waste is either incinerated in onboard furnaces or prepared for proper disposal at ports.
The drying technology helps in reducing the energy required for waste combustion in incinerators. By dehydrating waste first, less energy is consumed during incineration, which in turn lowers emissions and maximizes energy recovery. This sustainable approach ensures that ships comply with stringent international waste regulations, including those set by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
Astra LT AB and its partners from FTD LT EXPO Group dryers are designed to operate seamlessly with the ship’s existing waste-to-energy systems. By processing waste onboard, cruise liners not only reduce the volume of waste but also convert it into usable energy. This energy is often redirected to power other systems, such as cooling and refrigeration units, making the entire process eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
