EXPO Group Members UAB Aksonas and Astra LT AB Launches New Collaborative R&D Project under “Green Experiment” Initiative, Targeting Sustainable Solutions for Radioactively Contaminated Steel

FTD LT Cluster EXPO Group member UAB Aksonas has launched an ambitious research and development (R&D) project titled “Investment in Innovative, Environmentally Friendly Technology Creation and Demonstration” (Project No. 02-039-K-0011), executed in partnership with fellow FTD LT Cluster’s EXPO Group member Astra LT AB. Initiative, funded through the European Union’s “Green Experiment” program, focuses on creating cutting-edge decontamination technology for stainless steel pipes contaminated by radioactive nuclides. With a project budget of €702,985 and a funding contribution of €500,000 from the European Union, the project aligns with Lithuania’s Ministry of Economy and Innovation’s 2022–2030 Economic Transformation and Competitiveness Development Program.

FTD LT Cluster’s EXPO Group member UAB Aksonas, known for its expertise in mechanical equipment analysis, design, and manufacturing, aims to address a critical challenge in nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management through this project. The technology under development will decontaminate thousands of tons of stainless steel pipes from decommissioned nuclear plants, radioactive waste storage facilities, and other civil atomic infrastructures. By enabling the recycling of decontaminated steel back into the market, this technology represents a major advancement in sustainable industrial practices and resource recovery.

The project has significant environmental and economic implications. Upon completion, the decontamination technology will be applicable to active nuclear plants, as well as decommissioned sites, uranium enrichment facilities, and radioactive waste storage centers—critical facilities where stainless steel pipes become contaminated with radioactive nuclides over time. By targeting this growing need in the industry, FTD LT Cluster’s EXPO Group members UAB Aksonas and Astra LT AB are poised to make an impact on the safe and sustainable recycling of high-grade stainless steel, reducing the environmental footprint and promoting a circular economy within nuclear-related sectors.
