In a bold step toward sustainable innovation, Astra LT AB, a key member of the Food Technologies Digitalization LT Cluster’s EXPO Group, has partnered with the Lithuanian Energy Institute, also a member of the FTD LT Cluster, to launch the “Development of Innovative Composting Technology and Equipment” project (Project No. 02-039-K-0022). This project, part of Lithuania’s economic transformation program, is designed to drive the industrial sector toward climate neutrality with partial funding support from the EU’s “Green Experiment” initiative.
The tailored fermentation tank is designed to withstand the unique challenges presented by Finland’s cold climate, ensuring stable internal temperatures for optimal fermentation even during extreme weather. This insulation innovation will enable the brewery to maintain precise control over the fermentation process, critical for consistent product quality and operational efficiency.
The partnership aims to develop a revolutionary smart composting technology to convert manure and phosphogypsum waste into safe, marketable products. By applying the latest scientific and engineering advances, the collaboration seeks to create a process that enables efficient waste recycling, helping industries to embrace circular solutions that reduce waste and add environmental value.
This project stands to elevate FTD LT Cluster’s EXPO Group member Astra LT AB role in the field of sustainable manufacturing by adding a critical dimension to their production capabilities, enabling them to cater to environmentally-conscious clients across Europe. Beyond creating a streamlined composting technology, the project’s end result will be a full-scale, intelligent system that can easily be integrated into other industrial settings, marking a significant shift toward scalable green solutions.
For Astra LT AB, a leader in stainless steel tanks and vessels production for sectors such as food processing, brewing, chemical manufacturing, and healthcare, this project represents a strategic move to integrate sustainable innovation into its product line. It aligns with Food Technologies Digitalization LT Cluster’s EXPO Group commitment to delivering high-performance, eco-conscious solutions to its clients while enhancing its competitive position in the global market.
This three-year project, running from October 1, 2024, to April 1, 2027, is backed by a €1,020,455 budget, with €500,000 funded by the EU. The initiative exemplifies how the FTD LT Cluster fosters pioneering partnerships that showcase Lithuanian industrial expertise and reinforce its role in developing world-class sustainable technologies.

The project “Development of export markets and strengthening of internationalization of the FTD LT cluster” is implemented under the Progress Facility of the European Union Funds for the period 2021-2027, Development Programme 2022-2030.
